Behavior Management: REWARD SYSTEM

Moving to a higher grade makes any teacher reevaluate how she will run her classroom. In elementary using a clip chart is totally normal... but in 6th grade - I don't think so!!

One thing I am doing differently is my reward system. Since I am teaching 6 classes everyday for only 45 minutes I needed something quick and simple. Something that not everyone is stopping to count up and turn in dojos or bucks for prizes. Something that wouldn't eat up too much time and I could be very flexible with....

TICKETS.
Ticket bucket in my classroom.
Get the tickets I use at amazon!

How it Works:
-Kid is spotted on task/participating/helping someone/ect...
-I say loudly "OH WOW! Billy is doing such a great job working on his map skills!"
-I give Billy a ticket (or 2 if I am feeling generous)
-Billy writes his name on the back of it and keeps it at his desk.
-Move on with class, passing out more tickets to other children.
-At the end of the class, when we line up, Billy will drop his ticket(s) into his class pail.

Labels available on my TpT Store.
...The next day or 2 days or a week later...
-I decide it is time to draw a ticket (or 2 or 3) out of the pail.
-I tell the class that I am going to draw some tickets!
(I envision them just bubbling with excitement!)
-I draw BILLY's ticket!
(He is just beside himself with joy)
-He rushes up to "SCRATCH OFF SURPRISE BOARD"
-He scratches off a prize and gets it either immediately or the next day
(depending on when I drew his ticket and what the prize is)
-He bounces with glee and everyone else can't wait till their ticket gets drawn!!

I love this idea because I can control when and how many tickets/rewards are given.
With dojos or bucks I felt obligated to let everyone cash in for a prize at the same time for fairness and it would eat up a lot of time. With this new system I am trying out if I have 10 minutes I can draw several tickets, if we are about to leave I can draw just 1.

Below are the step by step guide if you are interested in making your OWN scratch off board to use for individual prizes or as whole class prizes:

1. Gather your supplies. You will need:

Poster board, glue, scissors, scratch off stickers or scratch off paint.

to see how to make your own scratch off paint visit my post: HERE!
OR
Buy the ones I use from amazon!
Just click the link below.
For me, spending 7.50 is a fair trade off for what it took me to make my own scratch off paint! :)

You will also need COUPONS!
Get these HERE!
2. Cut out your coupons and glue them down on the board. Don't forget the sign!
3. Laminate your poster.
You could also glue coupons on the back of poster before laminating that way you
have another board ready whenever all the front prizes are scratched off!

4. Apply the scratch off stickers or the paint.
It took 2 of my amazon stickers to cover the coupons. More scratch off fun for my kiddos!

5. Display somewhere the kids can see it and be excited about it, but not in a place where they can walk up to it and start scratching all your hard work off!!
I can't wait for the first few prizes to be revealed!!
**NOTE**
If I can't give them their prize immediately, I will tape their ticket to the prize they scratched off as a reminder of who still needs their prize!

These Gel Pens are the #1 prize (Get Your Gel On) on my scratch off board. The older kids LOVE them!!

Moving on UP!!

AH! Another school year is among us!!
I know I was terrible at posting last year, (It has been 6 days shy of a year...) BUT I was juggling a lot!!

NOW TO THE TEACHING STUFF! :)

This year I am making a BIG change. After spending 5 years teaching 3rd grade ELA, I am moving across the street to teach 6th grade Social Studies. I am a little nervous about this change since I haven't taught 6th grade kids and I am not really sure what to expect, but I am a lot of excited about this new adventure!!

I am really focusing on my procedures and expectations so the kids know exactly what to do from the moment they step foot in my room till the moment they leave. I know that routine is important and it doesn't matter if your teaching 8 year olds or 18 year olds, if they know what is expected of them and you as the teacher implement your expectations -- they will thrive.

Entrance to my NEW classroom!
WELCOME TO MRS. TEEL'S CLASSROOM!!

My big ole classroom with the smallest desks I have ever seen! Love the U shape for kids, no one will have their back to the promethean board and or their back to me!
I am not sure if my new classroom is larger or if it just seems like it is since the desks are so compact. I can't believe there are 26 desks in my classroom with still tons of walking room!!

Get these adorable CHAMPS pack here!
The first thing you see walking in is the CHAMPS spot. I am so excited to implement CHAMPS this year, I have not used it in the past but since it is now a requirement in my district I figured I better get to it. ;)
I love how I can flip through them! Since this is something I haven't used before I decided I needed to hang up something that is interactive, that will make me go back there and actually use it.

The green bucket belonged to my momma.
She gave it to me this year --
it has been in her classroom since her very first year!!
I only get 45 minutes with each of my classes (6 classes, who I see everyday) so I needed something quick and easy for behavior management. I love DOJOs and I used them in 3rd grade, but when it came time to turn in the points for prizes it would eat up an hour of our time -- something I can't afford in 6th grade.  SO, I decided I would try tickets. I plan on passing them out when the students are working nicely, on task, participating, ect... and they would write their name on the back of them and keep them on their desk until the end of the period.

Oh. My. Goodness.
I just noticed 4th period side popped up! Hot Glue STAT!!
On their way out the door they will drop their tickets in their class pail. I will randomly draw for a prize that I have already chosen (coupons for various things, gel pens, treasure box). For example, everyone is working and I will say "I think it is time to draw a name for this gel pen" draw a ticket and give that child their prize. I may draw every other day, once a week or twice in one day! Who knows! I am hoping it will keep them on their toes! Later in the school year I will put the prize choices on a poster board and cover them up with scratch off stickers, and when I draw their name they will be able to go scratch off for their prize!

Get this awesome template FOR FREE here!
Bathroom Visits. That is one procedure I was concerned about, until I found these amazing POTTY PASSES!! Each student will get 1 sheet of 5 potty passes for the entire 9 weeks that they can use during "work time". Any tickets that they have at the end of the 9 weeks will earn a prize! A few of my teammates loved the idea and we are hopefully going to do it team wide. If the students have 1 ticket left over they will be able to buy themselves into a movie during our collaboration time and if they have more tickets leftover they will get to buy snacks to go with their movie. The goal is that this motivates them enough so that they stay in their classrooms unless it is an emergency!!

Get the labels at my TpT store here!
If they do use a potty pass, after they turn it in to me they would get their hand sanitizer and but it on their desk. This way I know who is gone and I don't accidentally send a bunch of boys or girls to the restroom to socialize AND they get some hand sanitizer when they return!

I'm done! Now What? signs available at my TpT store here!!
"I am DONE! Now WHAT?" the question that haunts all teachers. I am not foreseeing a lot of this since I only have 45 minutes, but you always have those few kiddos that finish eons ahead of everyone else!!
"Finish Work" = any unfinished work they have from any class.
"Silent Read"= I am a reading teacher at heart, so I can't not have this option! Any book from the school library or they can visit my classroom library.
"Get a Bucket Game"= I have buckets on my back bookcase that will have social studies games in them.
"Write A Story"= any writing is good writing.
"Practice Map Skills"= On Popsicle sticks I have written different places for the students to find in an Atlas.

Love adding bling to my labels!
Love matching all my labels. SO bright. SO organized!!
My back bookcase. The bucket games are kept here along with the tubs for each classes interactive journals. I plan on creating their journal activities as we go which will go up for sale in my TpT store in June 2016. I will also post our activities as we go along here.

#readingrulez
Next to the bookcase is my library!
A condensed version of the one I had in my 3rd grade classroom!

Nothing better than 25 chromebooks already organized for you!!
This year I was blessed with a class set of chromebooks and I AM SO EXCITED. I can't wait to get my Google Classroom on and go digital with these techy kids!! These chromebooks and their incredible organization system was donated to me by Brooke Lowery, an INCREDIBLE teacher who has gone onto a bigger and better role in our district. They are in 5 crates that have been separated by a strong foam like board you can get from Hobby Lobby. Using different tapes she taped the computer, the board and the charger (not pictured). The chargers are fed through the holes and are all connected using extension cords that are hid behind the tubs. INGENIOUS!! They are numbered so each kid is getting the same chromebook and can be traced back to them.

There are 5 chromebooks in each tub.
The 5 Chromebook tubs sitting on the back counter, and you can't even see the chargers!
NO FUSS! NO MESS! I plan on getting a board to go on top of the crates that my sweet hubby will drill holes on both ends so I can lock them up to prevent any sticky fingers from walking away with them.
The first several times we use them I will be passing them out and collecting them until I feel confident that they can get them and put them back on their own.

Best Amazon find ever! Get it here!
Love this shower curtain world map! It is the perfect addition to my classroom since we travel the world learning about all the different places and people! I love that it is educational while still letting in that warm Texas sunlight!

GET IT NOW HERE!! Such a bargin y'all!!!
Who says pointers are just for elementary?!
These pointers I got for a buck in the Target dollar section is perfect for the kiddos and me to point out different places on our giant shower curtain map!

Exactly how many crates are needed for one 6th grade classroom?
Underneath my giant back counter are the perfect little spaces for my many crates and tubs. There are also 3 cubbies that are stuffed full with different things that I covered up with fabric.
Here I have my 6 tubs that will hold their PBL group projects. I did this in 3rd grade with their projects being kept in a team ziploc and it worked out quite well, of course that was with 22 kids and just 2 classes...

"WHERE in the WORLD are WE?" bulletin board
One thing I am VERY excited about is that our curriculum will take us to each continent, exploring the countries, the people, the geography, the culture traits and so much more. I created this "Where in the WORLD are We?" section on one of my dry erase boards to highlight the continent we are in. We begin our world adventure in North America. I already have each continent in a baggie and ready to go when it is their turn to make it to the board! :)
As we travel around the world and the continents come down, I will move their displays to this area underneath the other dry erase board.
The best part of my room, the poster size drawers!
I always try to create a teacher area that is my personal area to keep my binders, student data, resources and other things that the kids don't have immediate access to. I love the way it turned out this year!

Such a true statement and so appropriate for my classroom and for me!
I am so excited for this new adventure and to get this school year started...
class of 2022, Mrs. Teel is waiting for you!! :)

Getting ready to INVESTIGATE another year!

I am SO excited for this coming up 2014-2015 school year! I got a new classroom (one with a WINDOW and I am SO excited!!) this classroom is smaller than my last one, but it feels more cozy.

Our theme this year is detective/investigation. The 3rd grade team lucked out and snatched up the adorable pink panther for us. My classroom this year is completely in school theme, I went with bright chevron theme  (which you can grab at my TpT store) and with a few pink panthers scattered in there.

Let the tour of Mrs. Teel's 2014-2015 Classroom BEGIN!

First off, I am IN LOVE with my door this year!
Isn't that pink panther adorable?!?!
SO glad we got him!!

Here is the view from my door looking into my room. The sign hanging from the ceiling says "Welcome!" of course, you can purchase my pennants and have them spell out whatever you wish at

Calendar and jobs.
I will write each students name on the Popsicle stick and rotate them through each job on Mondays. The sticks not in the rotation will go in the Job Names pail.

This bookshelf is to the right of my door once you walk in. It houses dictionaries, textbooks, and the trays (with labels you can get at my TpT store) is for papers from office to pass out, a tray for things to turn into office, a spot for notes from home, and the colored ones are for my 2 classes (one blue, one green) to turn in any signed failing papers.

Pencil Sharpener station!

"KEEP CALM AND ALWAYS RETURN MY PENCILS"
hahaha! So true!!

Filing cabinet labels!!

The cabinets above my sink. Love that all my storage bins above my cabinets are all labeled and I know exactly what is in each one!

Here is another view of my room looking at the door and that bookshelf!

My small group table and my WINDOW!! :)
Love my bucket seats I created. Bought the tubs from wal-mart, and turned them upside dow, cut out a circle of memory foam and hot glued the fabric down! Easy peasy.

The shelf behind my small group table.. label CRAZY!!

A wide shot looking from my small group table.

My back cabinets. I really wanted a spot for all the major topics we cover in 3rd grade reading, especially the ones that are important to the STAAR test!!

Here is my bucks system that I will put the student names on and store their behavior bucks they earn. Next to that is "Text Features" bulletin display. Text features is one thing the 3rd graders must know. I will move the pink star to the text feature poster we are studying throughout the year so the kids know which one we are focusing on. :)

Here is the adorable Figurative Language display and the Grammar display. Again, I will move the pink star to emphasize the skill we are currently focusing on.

Here is how I keep track of where each student is at during the writing process.

As you can see, each of my classes (the blue class and the green class) have a numbered clip that they will move up and down the process.

Here is a peek into one of my cabinets... I clearly went LABEL CRAZY this year!!
But I am SO excited to be SO organized!

I love this arrangement for my desks. Their supply buckets stay perfectly between the desks (the bungee cords help with that) and the kids are not pushing it to each other desks.

Just pencils in their supply buckets for now!

I am also in love with my library. I bought tubs and labeled/organized my library by genres (labels available on my TpT store also!) I LOVE my crate seats too. Turns my library into a very cozy corner.

I made these by taking milk crates and covering them with an old green curtain I had, the memory foam, wood and covering the top with fabric.

The inside of the crates. Perfect for those books that don't exactly fit in with a certain genre or over flow books!

I found this adorable Book Hospital label on TpT and just fell in love!
Of course I have my EEKK! Framed and ready to go!
 Love framing different posters.

This year I am also going to try my hand at the popular library sticks we have all seen all over pinterest!
One for each class of course!!

A wide shot looking onto my small group area and library.

Here are my prefix and suffix boards you can see above the shelving.
These are available at my TpT store at:
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Prefixes-and-Suffixes-Mini-Posters-with-Banners-1279025

My MEGA desk. I have never had such a large desk area before but so excited that all my wires are hidden and I could decorate the from of my desk with my name!!

A shot of behind my desk. Covered an ugly board with fabric. It is so bright and cheery!

Here I will write what we are doing each day in the my reading class!
Plus the too cute rules I found on TpT!

My promethean board, floor space and white board. I don't have any student backs to the board, and it is where our lessons take place!

My Blurt chart. You can read more about this behavior tool I use here:

This is the side chalkboard directly to the left of my door. Here I have this board broken into 2 parts: Writing and Reading. Each with different important skills we learn throughout the year. The pink star will be pinned to the type of writing we are currently doing.

Here is the reading side. Again, the pink star will move next the skill we are focusing on that week!

Next to the chalk board is a bulletin board that I have created into my genre board. I bet you can guess what I will use that pink star for huh?? :)

I have created a working on words station next to my desk for students to spell out spelling words.
On top of the magnet desk is their turn in bucket.

On my campus we each get 6 Chromebooks. I am so excited to use this niffy charging station I created!

Here is that back shelving unit by my library. It holds my stations/buckets for daily five. I am missing my tape recorder for my books on tape!

Here is my big books station for daily five. It is underneath my big whiteboard by my Promethean board.

This is also apart of my daily five stations. I use this for creative writing.

Also on that back shelving is my colorful pens and revising/editing pens for students to use during the writing process.

I also have their paper stored here...

and different supplies they need during their time with me!!!

I will blog again once I have all my Daily Five stations up and running!

UNTIL THEN...

Happy Teaching Friends!!!
